Understanding Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a sheath, sometimes called a cap, that fits snugly over the visible portion of your tooth. Dental crowns are commonly used to:

• Protect a tooth that has been treated with a root canal
• Build up a tooth that is too small or has been worn down
• Support a dental bridge

In many cases, a dental crown is used when decay has developed around an old amalgam filling. In other instances, a porcelain filling may be a good option, but once the decay progresses to a certain point, only a crown will give the necessary support.
