Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is when your gums are attacked by bacteria in your mouth. It is the most common cause of tooth loss, and most adults in the US have some form of the disease. Fortunately, gum disease is preventable, treatable, and even completely reversible in most cases. However, treating gum disease depends on a commitment from you to perform your normal oral hygiene and to make your regular dental visits.
Gum disease comes in two types: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the more mild form of the disease, and is characterized by red, swollen, and tender gums. Periodontitis is the more severe form of the disease, and may be identified by receding gums, bleeding gums, and loose teeth.
Be aware of the symptoms of gum disease. These symptoms include:
If you have any of these symptoms, it is recommended that you contact your dentist immediately for an appointment. If detected early, periodontal treatment may be able to stop or completely reverse your gum disease.
If not detected early enough, gum disease may require surgical treatment and may eventually lead to tooth loss.
If you need gum disease treatment, please schedule an appointment at our Cherry Creek dentistry office today so we can evaluate the condition of your teeth and recommend appropriate treatments.
