Dental implants are a tooth replacement option that consists of an artificial tooth root made of bio-compatible titanium or a titanium alloy topped by an aesthetic ceramic dental crown.
The best dental implant candidates are people who:
During your consultation, all these factors will be evaluated to determine whether you are a good candidate for dental implants.
The first step in the dental implant process is placing the implant into the bone. Most often, a screw-type implant is used that can simply be driven into the place left by your lost tooth. Sometimes, it may be necessary to move the gums aside to allow for placement of the dental implant.
Once the implant is in place, it is left alone to rest and heal for several months. During this time, a process called osseointegration takes place, when your bone grows around and essentially incorporates the dental implant. This is what makes dental implants so strong, successful, and long-lasting.
Once osseointegration is complete, the implant is uncovered and topped with an abutment that will connect the implant to the dental crown. Depending on the model of dental implant used, this step may not always be necessary.
Once the abutment is healed, it is topped with a highly aesthetic dental crown.
Teeth in a day is when your dental implants are placed and topped with a crown in one day. This may be an option for some people, but is not always recommended. During your consultation, we can talk about the benefits and disadvantages of this procedure to determine whether it is right for you.
Yes and no. With proper care, dental implants can be a permanent restoration. However, the dental crown atop the implant may need to be replaced every ten years or so. And dental implants can sometimes fail under the same conditions that led to your first tooth loss, including bacterial infection and trauma. Your risk of losing dental implants is increased by poor oral hygiene, smoking, and other high-risk behaviors.
