What is the dental crown process like?
First, your tooth is prepared. In this step, material is removed from the tooth. The amount removed is generally determined by the extent of damage or decay your tooth has experienced.
Next, an impression is taken of your tooth. If you are having a traditional crown made, then the impression is taken using a plaster. If you are having a CEREC One Visit Crown, then an imaging powder is placed on the teeth and used to determine the proper shape for your crown.
If you are having a traditional crown made, a temporary crown will be made and fitted. You will wear this crown for about two weeks, until your permanent crown returns from the lab.
If you are having a one-visit crown made, you simply wait while your permanent crown is made.
When the final crown is ready, it will be fitted in place. In some cases, some subtle final color matching may be necessary.
Does the dental crown process hurt?
When your tooth is being prepared, you will be given appropriate pain medication to ensure you feel little or no discomfort. After the procedure, you may take a few more acetaminophen or ibuprofen tablets to keep the discomfort under control. However, there is not very much long-term discomfort associated with the placement of dental crowns.
Will I have to replace my crowns?
Most likely. Dental crowns are long-term restorations, lasting a decade or more with proper care. Few crowns will last a lifetime, but we will teach you the secrets of proper care that will help them last as long as possible. Current research suggests that few crowns need attention in less than five years, and 50-80% of crowns last more than 15 years.
